DEVELOPMENT GUIDES

Plan a 3D website around the visitor’s decision.

Use this checklist to commission an interactive website with a clear purpose, usable controls and an enquiry journey you can measure.

What belongs in a 3D website brief?

Define the visitor’s task, the model assets, the interactions and the next business action. These four decisions make a useful starting point for a custom 3D website estimate.

For example, a room explorer can help a property prospect understand a layout. A configurable product view can help a buyer compare options. A scanning demonstration can help a software client understand the proposed workflow. Each experience needs different models, controls and supporting content.

Start with one primary task and agree how you will know it works. “Visitors can select a room and read its dimensions” is a testable requirement. “Make everything 3D” does not tell the development team which user outcome matters.

Check the models before planning the animation

Share the actual source assets when possible. A screenshot is useful as a visual reference, but it does not establish that a model has separate rooms, editable materials or an animation rig. The preparation work can materially change the scope.

  • Rights: confirm the assets may be used commercially and distributed with the website.
  • Structure: identify selectable parts, room boundaries and named objects.
  • Visual detail: agree what must remain recognizable on desktop and mobile.
  • Animation: establish whether the model already has the required rig and motions.
  • Fallback: prepare a static or simplified view that still explains the product.

Keep essential text outside the model. A visitor should be able to understand the service and contact the business even before the interactive content has loaded.

Design the phone experience explicitly

A large desktop canvas does not automatically become a good phone interface. Labels can overlap, gestures can interfere with page scrolling and floating buttons can obscure useful controls. Agree the mobile layout and interaction rules during the prototype.

Useful acceptance checks include a visible reset control, readable labels, a way to operate essential actions without precise dragging, and enquiry links that remain reachable. If the experience uses scroll-driven animation, a reduced-motion setting should still present the information in a usable sequence.

Performance checks should use the assets and devices that represent your audience. Agree which content loads initially, which models load on demand and what happens if 3D rendering fails. Measure the finished implementation; do not treat a prototype on one fast laptop as proof of mobile performance.

Connect exploration to a useful enquiry

Give the visitor a specific next step at a sensible point in the experience. A service page can invite them to discuss their workflow; a room viewer can link to a project brief. Avoid making contact depend on completing the animation.

Measure exploration and enquiries separately. A click on “Discuss your project” shows interest. A successful form submission shows an enquiry. A qualified lead is a further business outcome, usually confirmed by the sales team. These should not be reported as the same event.

What changes the development scope?

The main factors include model preparation, the number of interactive states, custom animation, device support, backend connections and the content management needs. Reusing a suitable model can reduce one part of the work, but it does not remove design, integration or testing.

Ask for an estimate that identifies deliverables, assumptions and acceptance checks. Separate essential launch features from later enhancements. For example, a first release might support one property model and room selection, while a later release adds a property catalogue and an editor.
